A late 19th century sailor's woolwork, or 'woolie', of a naval warship. This is a very naive portrayal of this type of ship, which gives it an added folk art charm. The stylised form makes the work quite 'graphic', and is reminiscent of the naive maritime paintings of Alfred Wallis. There is the usual fading to the wools within the sky area, but the colours on the ship and sea are still nice and strong. Overall in very good condition. Worked on canvas mounted on pine panel. The reverse has remnants of Fleet Street paper labels, dated 1887.
