A rare and exceptional example of antique folk art. Sourced in West Devon, this 19th century hedge stick, most likely from blackthorn bush, uses its intricate and detailed penwork to tell the life story of a gentleman farmer.

At the centre of the stick, is drawn the squire and his wife, next to a rendition of their home. A couple of his cows reside next to fenced land, and beyond that a peacock struts. Obviously a river or stream runs near his land as a swan is portrayed swimming on water, while fish swim beneath its surface. We can see that this gentleman hunts, as we can see an image of him with his gun, as well as a pheasant and rabbit nearby. His hounds are seen chasing a fox. In addition to these images, are other decorative symbols, such as the sun, the moon, and the stars, as well as a heart, trees and flowers.

There is a natural surface patina to both ends, which suggests it had a practical use, most likely as a cattle prod for coaxing the cows into the milking shed. This stick represents a slice of country living in the 19th century, and is truly an exceptional work of art.
