A scrimshaw walking stick made up of a spiral-carved whale bone shaft, with a carved whale tooth handle. Items like this were made by sailors whilst on their long voyages at sea, created from the byproducts of harvesting marine mammals.

There is a slight curvature to the stick shaft, which is quite normal for these natural whale bone creations. Sailors used whatever materials they could find on board ship to make scrimshaw items, and therefore couldn't afford to be choosy about the quality. This just adds to the uniqueness of this maritime folk art piece.
