An original 19th century sailor's woolwork, or 'woolie' of a fully-rigged, three-masted merchant or passenger ship, flying the red ensign flag. The wonderfully naive and graphic execution of this example makes it particularly charming and 'folky'. Note the way that the crests of the sea waves have been portrayed in little 'arcs' of pale-coloured wools. In exceptionally good condition, and mounted in an attractive period frame.
