A rare example of a sailor's woolie, featuring a British lightship at sea. It portrays the Trinity House lightship which was moored at  Outer Gabbard in the North Sea, on the east coast of England. Trinity House is the British authority for lighthouses, keepers, and pilots and has been governed by Royal Charter since the 16th century. The origin of lightships dates back to the 18th century, and were the safe alterative to a static lighthouse.

This wonderfully graphic woolwork, cleverly using a lifebelt motif as a frame around the ship, really showcases the artistic talent of its creator. A particularly lovely example of maritime folk art. In excellent condition with bright strong colour. Note also how the original creator has recycled an old Bass Brewery picture frame in which to mount it.
