SOLD
A large sailor's woolwork on canvas of a steam and sail-powered passenger ship. It is an unusual example in that the ship has been portrayed at an angle. This, combined with the clever use of wool to create splashes of water at the bow of the ship, and the billowing smoke from the funnel, gives the picture a three-dimensional, animated quality. This achievement was extremely clever of the artist, and confirms that it must have been created by someone that understood maritime travel. The ship is flying three flags, representing France, the U. S. and Great Britain.
There is some fading to the wool colours, and there are a few broken threads, but overall in good condition with lots of rigging detail and padded sails. It has been taken out of the frame, the original glass cleaned and the back resealed.
