An antique walking cane made from shark vertebrae. This is an example of the many artefacts made by sailors from the byproducts of fishing and whaling ships in late 19th century. Individually made, each one of these sticks was unique, and are now referred to as 'maritime folk art'. This particular one has a carved hardwood handle, inlaid with cut and inscribed marine bone.
