A striking self-portrait by Constance Parish (1908–2001), executed in oil paint on board, when she was 29 years old. The quick loose style of the painting gives it a bold graphic quality, which is very apt for the 'modernist' influences around during this period.

Born in North London, she studied at Hornsey School of Art. She then became part of the Buchanan family when she married Norman, brother of David and Lilian Buchanan. They were all professional artists, who lived at The Holt in Eysham (near Oxford), and it is there where they helped form the Eynsham Arts Group. Constance retained her maiden name for all her artworks, so hence usually signed with the initials 'CP'.

Provenance: This painting has only recently come onto the market, having been kept in the family estate since 1937.
