A scratch-built wooden writing box, with external fretworked decoration of a grazing cow and accompanying borders. Inside is a baise-covered writing slope and storage area for pens and ink. Beneath one of the hinged flaps of the slope is a label which reads - 'Gertrude E. Simmons - This desk was made & given to her by her father on her 20th birthday. March 6th 1905'.
