A dynamic floral still life painting by Cornish female artist Garlick Barnes (1891–1987). This oil on canvas, competently painted with loose brushwork, and thick impasto application, has a vibrancy to it both in colour and composition. Signed lower left corner.
 
Garlick Barnes didn't turn her full attention to art until after raising a family. She had studied at the Sidney Cooper School of Art, Canterbury and at Hatherley's. In 1936 she became a pupil of Walter Richard Sickert in Thanet, Kent, and exhibited with him at Margate. In 1940 she moved to St Ives in Cornwall, and began working from The Loft Studio. She was a member of the Penwich Society of Arts and the Newlyn Society of Artists.
