A portrait of Cornish artist Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch RA (1869–1955) by Greta (Sequeira) Valentine (1907–1998). Greta was the wife of Birch's last patron, the Scottish fine art publisher Ranald Valentine. This portrait was painted at her home in Coupar Angus, Perth, in 1940 when Birch was 71. The canvas had been provided by Birch from his personal stock at Greta's home where he had a studio. At the time, Greta was an art student, and went on to become Birch's muse and constant companion at society functions and private view days at the Royal Academy, as well as being a guest at his home in Lamorna, Cornwall.
The painting is in reasonably good condition with only minor scratches and abrasions to the paint surface. There is however a small tear in the top quarter of the canvas, but this does not detract from the portrait's impact. Recently framed.
