A superb naive watercolour of the battlecruiser HMS Lion, flanked by two British submarines and a destroyer,  passing Calf Island lighthouse. Most likely painted by a sailor serving on the ship. Executed on paper mounted on board. A rare portrait of this important early 20th century warship. Original period frame. There are a few vertical wrinkles to paper.
 
HMS Lion was a battlecruiser built in 1909 for the Royal Navy at HM Dockyard, Devonport in Plymouth. She was launched in 1910 and was the lead ship her class. She served as the flagship of the Grand Fleet's battlecruisers throughout WW1.
 
Calf Island is located off the southwest coast of the Isle of Man, separated by a narrow stretch of water called Calf Sound.
