One of the rarer Puffin Picture Books, illustrated by Clarke Hutton. Published in 1942, during the Second World War. In good condition, with bright colour, and original staple binding.

This is a book title from the very collectable 'Puffin Picture Book' series started by Penguin Books in the early 1940s. They were edited by Noel Carrington, an authority on print and design, who commissioned many of the leading graphic artists of the period to contribute. These included Edward Bawden, Clarket Hutton, Brynhild Parker, and Enid Marx.

They were launched in December 1940, and were noteworthy for their use of colour printing from autho-lithography (in which the artist draws directly onto the printing plate). This wartime economy was phased out in peacetime, and replaced by photo-lithography.
