A striking watercolour study of black pansies in a porcelain bowl by Mary A. Lowe. She was obviously a talented artist, who used watercolours to great effect. Lowe studied at the Birmingham School of Art sometime between 1884 and 1920. Some artistic influences dating from around this period are reflected in this painting. There is a noticeable hint of 'Japonisme' - the late 19th century craze for Japanese art and design in the West - as well as slight influence from the work of Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) and his followers.

The painting is in excellent condition. Mounted in a later frame, possibly from when it was exhibited in 1987.
