A pair of large agateware ceramic storage barrels, most likely made by Seaton Pottery in Aberdeen. Both bear a carouche to their fronts, inscribed 'MRS SUTHERLAND - 1894'. These personalised examples would have been a one-off commission for the pottery works, possibly for a wedding gift. These earthenware barrels are quite rare, and it is certainly exceptionally rare to find a matching pair such as this.
 
There are a few minor chibbles to the top rims, which is to be expected, but otherwise they are in very good condition. One lid may not be the correct one, as it does not fit as snugly into its recess as the other. They are lovely examples of vernacular domestic ware.
 
This agateware pottery was created by layering different coloured raw clays together, and then kneeding them so that they 'merged' and created an overall marbled clay. This would then be used to throw or mould into vessels or figurines, before firing.
