A souvenir porcelain mug commemorating the marriage between Carew Davies Gilbert and Grace Massey Dawson in 1881. The mug is in fairly good condition with all the gilt inscription present and legible. Hairline crack to base. A lovely morsel of Cornish history!

Carew Davies Gilbert was born at Trelissick House, near Truro, in 1852. The house, originally built in 1750, had been purchased by Carew's father in 1844 and was to serve as their main family home. After his father's death, Carew inherited Trelissick and went on to commission Piers St Aubyn to make additions to it. Carew also further developed the gardens and grounds with a collection of conifers and rare plants, many of which he brought back from his extensive foreign travels during the late 19th century. Carew Davies Gilbert died in 1913, having served as magistrate, deputy lieutenant, and High Sheriff of Cornwall.

Trelissick Gardens are now owned and managed by the National Trust.
